Emmys Most Miserable: Claire Danes
I feel like whenever I see Claire Danes smile, she doesn’t really mean it. Duana asked the question during the liveblog last night - when was the last time Claire Danes threw her head back and laughed, heartily?
If you watched MSCL, you’ll understand the attachment we feel to her. And therefore the disappointment about what happened with Billy Crudup. It didn’t last, obviously, and it never does, and she’s with Hugh Dancy now (he did not attend with her) and they’re married and stable and she’s back on television and that’s all great and I hate to be bringing up this conversation - again - but I only do it because the toll that she took through it, it left some pretty visible and permanent scars. And I don’t just mean the stories that keep circulating about what a drunk mess she is at these events either...
I saw Dancy at TIFF several times last week. He’s very nice, he was relaxed and comfortable, seemed to have a great time catching up with friends. There was nothing smutty to report. But I will say there’s a noticeable difference in their demeanours. Where he is chill and loose, she’s seems withdrawn and, frankly, rather unhappy a lot of the time. Which is why she can’t come alive in this dress. This is a dress that could totally pop. Only Claire hasn’t been poppy in a long, long time.

Also at a charity event this weekend. LOVE this dress. But look at her eyes, y’all. Look at her face. You already know what my mother calls this face, right? That’s right, gossips. This is karma face. To go along with her karma womb. The effects of homewrecking eating away at the fresh-faced beauty we saw in Romeo & Juliet. Guilt truly is a cancer, non?
While we’re on the subject of karma wombs…saw a preview for Billy’s next movie the other day ironically titled Trust the Man. Hate to say it but he looked hot. Short, but hot. Which means there’s a lot of cheating left in him. Sad thing is, I think she knows it. And desperate times call for desperate measures.

One of my favourites, particularly on the West Wing. Who wouldn’t sympathise with a woman deserted in her 8th month? But as much as I adore Mary Louise Parker, I am also very frightened by the size of her mouth. Was it always this big? On a related note, she apparently showed up at this event along with Claire Danes. Is your smutty sense tingling? I’ve heard nothing about a détente but Claire’s so pathetic these days, it wouldn’t surprise me if Mary’s bitterness has melted under the burden of pity. After all, once a cheater, always a cheater…especially in Hollywood.

Check out a glorious Claire Danes in London for the premiere of Shopgirl this weekend. Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. Gorgeous and frail and lonely and torn, all at the same time. You all know who her boyfriend is. You all know how they got together. You all know about the media sh*tstorm that rained down on their relationship when word got out. And even though it’s been a few years since the homewrecking went down, Claire and Billy will never be able to step out officially without revisiting the history behind their love. Up to this point, that was OK. But given that her name is now being tossed about for Oscar contention…well, that changes things a bit, doesn’t it?
Claire is among 6 or 7 women widely believed to be shortlisted for Oscar next year. While Reese and Charlize will probably be the ones duking it out in the end, this would be a huge honour for young Claire, who has worked hard to build an impressive career. Needless to say, Claire is desperate to have Billy along for the ride, to accompany her at these events, to stand by her as she gets to the next level. Unfortunately, she also knows and is reminded every day by her own management team, Steve Martin, the studio, the production company…blah blah blah… that coming out on the red carpet with her boyfriend who she stole from another woman while she was 7 months preggers with his kid would be a complete public relations nightmare. It ain’t happening.
So…The frustration, the shame, the hiding – she’s had enough. And rumour has it, she is seriously thinking about breaking things off. VERY smart move. Even smarter if she could coincide leaking news of the split right around nomination season. I’d say early January, just before the Globes, when Oscar fever begins to build to a frenzy. In spite of myself, I feel almost bad about this one. Almost. But not quite.
She risked so much for love. She gave up a LOT. Pride, respect, dignity, professional reputation - you name it, she lost it and she's losing it. But for a while there, it was worth the sacrifice. They were happy. Until just before the holidays when she noticed an unmistakeable chill. At first she thought it was the stress of being apart, on different film sets. But then he came home and it got worse. A familiar pattern it seems. He was losing interest and she became more desperate to regain his attention. First it was the phone calls and that escalated to extreme clingyness…to the point where he had to tell her to back off. So recently, she started self medicating. Sleeping pills, uppers, weed, alcohol - the consumption is rising and people are getting worried. Because it's affecting her professionally. A few late calls, delayed shoots, fumbled lines. People are starting to talk. Which is why a couple of concerned friends asked him to intervene, to help turn her around. And you know what he said? Her soulmate, her partner, the love of her life??? 'I don't have time right now. I'll get to it when I have the chance.' It took 4 days for him to show up and his arrival immediately turned her around. But those close to her are not impressed. And they think the longer she stays with him, the more dangerous things will get.

You remember her, don’t you? Clinging to love?
Well I hear the situation hasn’t improved. She now believes the only way she’ll keep him is if she gives him a baby. And they’ve been trying their best with no results. Which is why she’s now visiting fertility specialists, popping vitamins, doing whatever it takes to improve her chances. But the longer it takes, the more frantic she is that he’ll leave her. Sick with worry, sick with insecurity, the girl is STRESSED out, which really can’t be helping things at all.
